For many artists, the motivation for expression is a calling. A sincere thirst to create. First time author George Means recently received such a message. "I was having a less than good day", George says. "Then, I started to see things around me-things that I had looked at all my life-totally different. My environment was communicating with me, helping to ease my anxiety. Means grabbed a camera, determined to capture the essence of what he was experiencing. "I just let the landscape speak for itself, then I recorded it" he says. " It was a lot like interviewing someone. The resulting book, What a Crazy Weekend, is spectacular. Means captures the flavor of South Queens and Long Island as few others have. For those whose views of New York come from Hollywood, the pictures are great for a look at the authentic New York. Die hard New Yorkers will also find the book refreshing. Many residents nod in acknowledgement of familiar sights such as Baisley Park, seen... More > from a different angle. If you live in NY, the pace of life rarely gives you times to appreciate its exquisite natural beauty. What a Crazy Weekend helps everyone pause and experience NY at a civilized pace. Means has been humbled by the lavish praise his book has garnered. He has filled request orders from many neighborhood restaurants and barbershops. "The response has really been great", he relates. "The fact that people would put my photos up in their businesses says a lot. New Yorkers are very opinionated about their city" It was a pleasure speaking with Means during his recent book tour. His enthusiasm about his fellow authors is amazing. "It's great to parley with my peers. So many people never get to see their work published", he reminds. Several times during our talk, Means took the time to answer questions from passers-by. "You gotta appreciate your readers" he says seriously. "Without them, I have no audience" Catch up with Means on the next stop of his tour. Look for the big guy with the even bigger smile.< Less
