Don’t let the modest size of TLC for Frazzled Kids: Helping Grown Ups Help Kids by Nancy Goodell and Ann Garrett fool you. Its 104 pages are packed with so much wisdom that, while reading it, I kept asking myself “Where was this book when I needed it?” This mighty little book could also be titled TLC for Frazzled Parents of Frazzled Kids. Every page within every short chapter throws a lifeline to parents and caretakers at their wits end as to how best help their children during difficult times. Goodell and Garrett have spent their lives working with children who exhibit out-of-control behaviors. During her 40 years as a teacher serving at-risk children during which Goodell developed a model that help grownups help kids. Garrett, the author of six published children’s books, spent years working with severely disturbed children and began using Goodell’s model while working with her at a therapeutic school. “We cannot protect our children from the challenges they face, but we can support... More > them to learn strategies that will enable them to be safe and successful, even when they are stressed,” writes Goodell. Over the years, her definition of frazzled kids has broadened to include all children who at one time or another lose control. Delightfully illustrated by renowned cartoonist Gaspar Vaccaro, TLC for Frazzled Kids provides adults with a step-by-step process to use with “frazzled” children. The techniques are simple. For example: set clear limits to ensure safety and success; issue comprehensible guidance and offer affirming feedback; apply logical and natural consequences to reinforce personal responsibility; encourage honesty in a non-punitive environment; maintain a calm, balanced, non-threatening demeanor; establish routines; have realistic expectations; encourage children to recognize their bodily responses to stress and to develop calming strategies. Not all of us are prepared to be the parent our children need us to be. This book can help rectify that situation. Parents and children can build the bridge together.< Less

I could not put this delightful and thoughtful book down. TLC for Frazzled Kids contains incredibly practical and clear tools for not only dealing with "modern-world" children in classrooms but also children at home. The wisdom in these pages offers the most "conscious" information in dealing with any learning relationship: spouses, friends, and children. It reinforced being kind and disciplined with myself as well. The introduction is a human story concerning the fears of entering the "educational system" and the classroom. The authors discuss the obstacles appearing too foreboding to overcome and the courage it takes to be on the front-line in education in America. The illustrations are hilarious and bring a lighthearted look to the frustrations and joys of seeing children progress when given a nurturing developmental learning environment. Cheers to these wonderful women who have compiled this easily understood treatise.

This book is pure gold. Nancy Goodell and Ann Garrett have distilled decades of working with children into an easy-to-follow and effective method for creating sanity and peace when children are in meltdown. As an elementary school teacher, I've watched children physically relax and begin problem solving when I use these strategies to facilitate conflicts -- both on the playground and in the classroom. What I love most about the authors' approach is that children and adults both come through with self respect intact. This volume is concise, straight forward, and one you will want to carry around in your back pocket to help you do well by the children in your care.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable read, historical and practical. This book starts with a story that is revealing and rich with experience and wisdom. It sets the stage for what is to follow, the process of TLC for Frazzled Kids. No matter the setting, parenting today has become more complicated and challenging. Our children are constantly bombarded with information and technology that overwhelm and stress them in ways we could never have imagined. As a result, parents and caregivers are challenged to focus on parenting like never before. TLC for Frazzled Kids brings adults back to the core principles of good parenting and therapeutic interventions, focusing on positive, strength-based, non-punitive interactions with children. As parents and caregivers, we can be quick to react and step into conflicts with children that express our frustration, but do not honor the child’s needs. Hence, we miss out on opportunities to teach and build self-esteem. The process of TLC for Frazzled Kids... More > reminds and guides parents back to what is important, that is, protecting, leading, teaching, guiding, listening, understanding, supporting, and treating our most precious children with tender loving care.< Less
