Paul wonders what could cause a promising young writer to reject an opportunity. Paul and Allison interrogate each other. We see the events that brought Allison to The Crisis Intervention Center, first as a patient, then as a volunteer counselor, then as a paid staffer. Paul's past is somewhat more mysterious. At a fund raiser, Mark's art is shown mistakenly, generating unwanted publicity for The Center. He breaks down becoming violent.
