A History of the Anzac Rifle Range, Malabar

ByNathan ScudderMatthew Moses

The Anzac Rifle Range, Malabar, is the last of three fullbore rifle ranges in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney. This book traces the history of the rifle range, from four hundred acres of reserves set aside in 1855, through its dedication for military purposes in 1910, to the legal battle with the Federal Government to ensure its continued existence. The renaming of the Range in 1970 from the Long Bay Rifle Range to the Anzac Rifle Range, Malabar was a tribute to those who died for their country, many of whom trained at the site. Throughout the development of the Eastern Suburbs, the areas of natural vegetation within the Anzac Range have remained relatively undisturbed, providing a sanctuary for wildlife. The inclusion of a section of the range in the National Estate in the late 1980s demonstrates the environmental importance of the site.
