Great read! I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys movies. I enjoyed all the 'behind the scenes' tidbits about the movies, actors/actresses, writers and movie production. Nathan has a very engaging style that is a joy to read. Even the casual movie watcher will enjoy this book. It has greatly increased the list of movies that I now consider to be 'must see' movies!

What fun! I thought I'd get a quick perspective of Swanson's "Download This Movie" by randomly opening to a film or two and skimming the page. What a delicious surprise to find myself 20 minutes later and fully engaged in plot points, behind the scenes shenanigans and maneuverings, intriguing references to other films, and political markers for a handful of movies that I now realize I must revisit (or see for the first time)! This is like a really great meal shared with your well-read, movie-buff friends...lots of interesting films to discuss, great tidbits of gossip, historical/cultural references reheating old synapses and that happy feeling of a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Swanson fit 70 of his favorites into this chatty reference. Many of his picks are also favorites of mine. They are mainly from the 1950s, '60s, '70s, and '80s -- although there are bookends from the 1930s and through the '90s. From "Dinner at Eight" with Harlow and "The Manchurian... More > Candidate" with Landsbury and Sinatra to Tarantino's "Reservoir Dogs" and the iconic rockumentary "This Is Spinal Tap" (with a whole lot in-between), Swanson often nests his reviews within the political and economic headlines of the day before weaving in industry notes, cultural positioning, and little-known but choice facts about movie principals and how the films fit along their career tracks. A friend who is a huge fan of classic movies and stage productions is going to receive a copy of this book for the holidays. It will be perfect!< Less

Could not wait to pick up this book each night and read another movie tale! Nathan is an excellent writer, enticing you to watch the movie with a few juicy details and saving the key surprises for you to discover. I've greatly extended my must-see movie list by reading his book. And I am planning to order 3 more books to give to my movie afficionado friends.

I recently read this book and was fascinated by the details given about prominent actors/actresses/directors of "back in the day," combined with a dash of political and social commentary relating to these great flicks. Having these perspectives makes the movies more enjoyable and puts them in a nice context. Two thumbs up!
