"Accept the Greener Challenge" This report lists 10 recommendations for the greening of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics campus in Durham, North Carolina. The school is a public residential school for 11th and 12th grades. The school buildings are primarily renovated from their earlier use as the historic Watts Hospital and the school grounds comprise the surrounding 23-plus acres. Students have studied how the school can ensure that new buildings are environmentally sound and have proposed a plan for tree planting designed to re-capture both the historic beauty of the campus and the carbon sequestration potential of trees that have been lost as the school expands. A "scorecard" describing appropriate GreenScaping practices for maintaining the grounds in a sustainable manner is detailed. Recommendations that address conservation of water, energy and recycling of waste are also presented in the report. Several ideas for involving the wider school... More > community in "greening" the campus are also presented including a legacy program that would allow small contributions to accumulate in a fund that might ultimately be used to purchase solar panels, green roofs and energy saving devices for the school.< Less
