Review by Maggie Hornby, Retired Osteopath,West Yorkshire, England 12th September 2010 Jake (‘I’m thinkin’…’) slowly and completely captured my heart and my emotions. It tells the story of the Smith twins, Jake and Jade, and their friends, when their lives are forever changed by a terrible accident on the twins’ ranch. From the outset, the reader experiences the journey, which each of the characters is undertaking, in an effort to come to terms with the devastation which has come into their lives. The struggle to recapture their old lifestyles and relationships is explored, in a wonderfully interesting form, using a unique style of writing to highlight thoughts and emotions. The book is set in the beautiful US state of Montana and the author uses the wealth of beauty of the scenery to colour her descriptive text, using the changing seasons as anchor points in the story. It is obvious that the author has thoroughly researched her subject, as she succeeds in dealing with such dark and... More > deep subjects as seizures, communicational problems, relationship issues, and psychological and physical effects caused by the events, whilst still maintaining an extremely strong storyline. There were scenes in this novel that were quite harrowing, but that, in itself, only adds to the poignancy of the writing. Reading the description on the cover of “Jake (‘I’m thinkin’…’), readers may be discouraged by assuming that this book may be a little “text-bookish” for their taste, but, though dealing with serious real-life problems, the author still maintains an air of mystery and expectation as the events of the story slowly unfold and each small piece of the puzzle is cleverly revealed. It is not a book to sit down and flip to the end to see what happens. This book is for the serious reader. From the beginning right through to the end, the reader becomes involved with the characters, to such an extent, that more than a few tears were shed over my copy, on a number of occasions. Jake (‘I’m thinkin’…’) is the best book that I have read in a very long time. It is extremely well researched, sensitively and descriptively written, thought provoking and inspiring. Above all, it is suitable material for anyone to read because of the high moral values that the characters live by and the respect they have for each other. Lessons can be learned from this book by our modern day society. On reading the end of the story, I also felt as if I had completed a journey.< Less
