Away From Home Season comes into sight of readers when the war at the Vietnam’s Southwestern Border Front ended 21 years ago. Literature often begins to say too late on war subject; there is almost no novel about this fierce war impressed the readers during so many years… 204 pages of the book tell us about the life and fighting story of a single 12.7 mm machine gun belonged to a Vietnamese infantry battalion garrisoned at the Northwest Cambodia, close to the Thailand- Cambodia border. The main character is Huy, a Saigonese who took his military service and his comrades in the platoon. The occurrence time was about 1984 to 1987, when the war came to its peak before ending. With just one platoon and in a few years, yet all of what called the harshness of war still appears sufficiently in Away From Home Season: the fierce battles in which the line between life and death is only a thin thread; the uninterrupted operations with so much hardships and privations – especially lack of... More > drinking water in the dry season; the homeward nostalgia and the lonesomeness of the expeditionary soldiers… So much of hear-broken loss before the fall of one’s most comrade that he may be lunatic or commit suicide… From that, the soldiers' portrait are showed very sufficiently: this one heroic, the other coward; this one harden, the other weak… Even there are a few who hold guns to rape the people so that they have to be executed by shooting… Above all of that harshness is a kind of honest, pure comradeship, loving each other more than one’s own brother in a family. And certainly, there are sure enough the love stories with the native girls – some stayed for good with their new own family in their new Motherland, some just have a “transient fun” in their time of military service, some loved really but having to face to the mercilessness of the war… The soldiers’ portrait are so diversified thus, the “ideal of holding gun” is not presented monotonously as well. Coming back over and over again in the mind of Huy, Quan… is the tormented question: I come here to fight and die for what? Is this task really meaningful and necessary? Those questions, and the ways that everybody find his own answer to have peaceful mind to fight continuously is really the highest thinking value of Away From Home Season. It also helps the novel to have a convincible truth. Heroic but very daily-life. Harsh but not mournful. Everything seem to be written so easily by Nguyen Thanh Nhan; it seems that he would have written in a sitting, not for two years, “like draw out from my guts to write” as his confidence, for a part of his own bygone youth, for his comrades who have fell down. (My dear comrades! Your tombs have been covered with many fall-died layers of grass. Your names, your images now just remain in my memory – the short memories would suddenly appear in moment, and then again plunge into the chaos of everyday life. What that matters is I have no right to forget!...) Away From Home Season once again remind the readers things that they having no right to forget, and is worth to be ranked among the excellent books about war. (After writer NGUYEN ĐONG THUC)< Less

Rarely do readers have the opportunity to experience life away from home in such a dynamic way as AWAY FROM HOME SEASON. This book opens our eyes and heart to times when while we miss our loves, special food, holidays and friends, "being away" cast us on the shores of adventure when the contrasts with what we already know as true is sharpened in a new venue of a foreign land. The author opens heart and mind with questions we'll never answer, but at the same time refreshes life by helping us live between worlds. He teaches us through fascinating characters that all good learning happens as we cross over boarders. Love this book! Home is not a place, it is where we are at any given moment.
