Nic Lee is not writing for a niche market of diabetic sufferers (although anyone with the conditional will want to hear what he says) but for anyone interested in a well-told story of a difficult childhood and a tough young manhood. This a story that takes in Nic Lee's travels from life on an estate, to university, to Florida, to Britain again and the mind-numbing job of cold-calling, a life full of mistakes, humour, marriages, reverses, and finally, as a diabetic nurse, to an understanding of his condition and how to live with it. Nic Lee writes a two-fisted prose that moves swiftly from climax to climax as if he were the natural child of Tom Wolfe and Joyce Carol Oates and it is more than possible that this book, in itself, is yet another new beginning for Nic Lee, full-time author. Take special note, for instance, of his use of dialogue: he has an ear for how different people speak so barely needs the customary stage directions. Hats off, then, to a new talent.

A thoroughly enjoyable read from start to finish, it explains in easy to understand terms the ups and downs of type 1 diabetes and how to overcome them...
