A less refined novel than the author's other book - She's Electric - Mersey Paradise is still a funny and well-worked story which is more than just an attempt to tell the story of provincial music fans at the height of Madchester. There's family drama, loss, betrayal and a real emotional centre to this book. And while its style is less developed than what I can assume is the author's follow-up, it's still a very cohesive and well-developed narrative. It works as a review of the time, the music and the attitudes of young people at the time, and is very timely in the context of the Stone Roses' recent return. I loved the characters and each were very well-crafted. Their interlinked stories and relationships are also very well developed and believable. These weave through the main story well and carry it in places where the premise appears a little weak. All in all, it's a must for fans of the Madchester scene and anyone who likes drug-fuelled road trips and adolescent drama.

I just finished reading this book and I've got to say I loved it. Given the importance of the period of the 90’s and the idea that everyone could do anything, there were great bands and general chaos of the lad culture all over the country, it’s amazing that a book like this hasn't been brought out before. The book itself has good characters and sharp funny dialogue and nice tension building up to the gig in Spike Island with the best /worst road trip ever. If you were there getting into the whole Madchester scene then you’ll love it, even if you weren't and want to see what you missed its well worth a read.
