"The Dead Locust " A real page turner. Tightly written and gripping, Smedley held my attention from the first page to the last. The world, of East Africa in the Victorian age, he created felt real, even though it was conjured up with few words and little description. Highly recommended

"The Dead Locust" Brilliantly imagined recreation of the true story of the discovery of the source of the Nile, conjuring up the bitter truth of white and black slavery, the swirling dreamworld of African witchcraft, and the terrors of travelling in tropical jungle before eco-tourism. A bizarre love story that defies Victorian taboos is also woven into the tapestry. The taut tale races along, in an easy and economical style, full of iridescent description and derring-do dialogue. Recommended.

"The Dead Locust" 'Edge of the seat' would be the right description for a story that makes you feel as if you are with the explorer. Exciting and rewarding to read.
