Dec 9, 2011Going Back (The Moon Can't Wait ) is a journey which gathers pace from the beginning and draws the reader into an ever-twisting drama of events. The suspense and intrigue builds throughout the story, helped by the deft portrayal of an international cast of subjects who hold very different views and motives, but who are brought together as a team by their predicament on the surface of the moon. Tensions between the characters become apparent as the journey progresses, and their professionalism and loyalties begin to conflict. The attention to technical detail adds greatly to the plausibility of this original story. The lunar journey is underpinned by an obvious knowledge of the science behind such an undertaking, and the author writes with surety and authority. The story has an unexpected gravitas for a novel of this length, and some of the world's most pressing political and scientific issues are successfully woven into the very fabric of the plot without hindering its progress. Going... More > Back (The Moon Can't Wait) is an enjoyable and very thought-provoking read.< Less
Apr 19, 2011I'm trying NOT to read all the short stories too quickly because I don't want them to end. Nicky Poole's anthologies pick you up and plop you right in the middle of each story with his descriptions and dialogues. "Real Christmas" is one of my favorites, which says so much about conforming (or not) to retail marketing schedules. The novella "Going Back" is the grand finale, however. It was a real page-turner, and I absolutely do not like stories set in outer space, the moon, or space ships. This was fabulous! And funny: there are some very funny one-liners that had me laughing out loud.
Mar 30, 2011Nicky has an amazing way with words and this book contains some cracking yarns, great for picking up, having a browse, finding a gem that gets you giggling and feeling a whole lot better! I have also read GSOH and can thoroughly recommend that too!
Mar 26, 2011I have just finished reading this book which was recommended by a friend, and must say I enjoyed it immensely. The first short story ‘Black and White’ gripped me from the off with the excellent opening description of a snowy scene, I felt as though I was there. The writer has a knack of drawing you in with his humour and descriptive penmanship, and I particularly enjoyed the novella, so much so that I read this to the end without putting it down. I’m no science buff, but the plot was very plausible and interlaced with interesting science facts along the way. The characters were believable and I enjoyed watching their personalities and traits develop, particularly that of Patterson. Mr Poole is a thoroughly entertaining author, and I look forward to reading any stories from him in the future.
May 27, 2010By Annette Heys This is a well-crafted, thoroughly enjoyable anthology. The short stories are varied and entertaining owing to the author's ability to create a range of interesting characters and situations. As for the novella, even though I'm not a fan of science-fiction or futuristic material, I have to say I was spellbound by the credibility of the situation in which the author placed his characters. The description of the moon environment and the technical language used to describe various pieces of equipment is extremely well done, but it was the gradual build up of suspense that had me wanting to read on. I enjoyed Mr. Poole's style of writing and would definitely read more 'futuristic' work by him.
