"Eight Months In Arizona" is a story about incarcerated youth inside of an out-of-state paramilitary boot camp institution named Arizona Boys Ranch. In 1998 the institution was shut down after staff members killed a resident. The majority of the narrative content revolves around my experiences during the early 90s: gangbanging, graffiti, mental illness, institutionalism, hip-hop, videogames, drug use. I try to give voice to the overlooked, outsider, the delinquent, oversexed, young and violent, people raised by single parents, in troubling neighborhoods, all the above for whatever reasons. As far as the aesthetic of my writing is concerned I still feel invested in things like ‘voice’, and creating imagery that allows my readers to ‘see’. I have chosen to self-publish the "Orientation Phase" of my novel in progress, with the hopes that if it generates any attention i can soon complete the remaining three phases.
