Norman Milliken's poems are careful and deliberate. Reverential, even. He keeps the reader at a safe distance as he struggles to share his experience while protecting us from it at the same time. "When They Come with Guns," is stunning in its restraint and heartbreaking in its sincerity--a haunting collection.

Mr. Milliken was my Creative Writing Club advisor in high school and one of my most respected mentors. This haunting, sober, sad, but ultimately forgiving collection of his poetry is worth every cent for this book. War poetry is deeply personal and takes great courage to share. This collection should be required reading for all who have the authority to declare war as well as those who rightfully fear its consequences.
