This is the third part of Philip Wylie’s psychobiography – written by his timid grandfather Norman Wylie – which covers seven generations of struggle with intellectual ‘conditions’, blindness, poverty and social awkwardness. Philip shares his insights throughout the book after realising that Norman was not the grandfather he thought he was. On the surface, Norman’s memoirs are full of dark humour – influenced by Tony Hancock – and intellectual anecdotes on subjects ranging from coin collecting and dentistry to animal psychology and his fear of public speaking. However in the sinister shadows lie deep fears of failure, destitution and social exclusion. Norman did everything right except he was unable to be empathetic or express his feelings. Norman’s lack of empathy - fuelled by fear and ultra-rightwing politics - caused his son Robert to be bitter, ruthless and psychotic, defrauding the family while pretending to be an aristocrat.

I found this book to be a humourous and easy going read. The anecdotes cover decades of life in England and how the main charectors, mostly middle class, well educated and intelligent people get on with life and interact with those around them. They do this in an often odd and amusing way due the unavoidable fact that they display the traits of Aspergers Syndrome. If you have an interest in human relationships and oddball people and possess a sense of humour I am sure you will enjoy this book.
