The book of Exodus allows the reader to journey with the people of Israel from captivity, through the plagues, through the red sea, through God's provision in the wilderness, through God's provision of military victory over the Amalekites, through the giving of the law and the regulations, through the covenant ceremony, through the giving of the instructions for the tabernacle, through the rebellion and restoration surrounding the golden calf incident, and the construction of the tabernacle and the dwelling of the Lord's presence within the tabernacle in Exodus 35-40.
As we embark on that journey, we learn that it is a picture of our own. We were in bondage before our deliverer came to us. Our deliverer was Jesus. We now find ourselves in a wilderness between our deliverance and our ultimate promised land (the new heavens and earth promised in Revelation). And, like Is-rael, we experience God's gracious provision and presence with us in the wilderness.
