This is an impressive memoir and contribution from a woman who's father died before she was born. The story is very compelling and reflects the history of a very tragic event. Dr. Adkins brings to life her father and his contribution to American history. I was enlightened after reading about this moment in history and the great contributions and sacrifices made by African Americans during time of the Second World War. I wasn't aware of this event, but have been filled with new information. Letters To My Father: The Gifts is a must read for adults and children. I recommend this book for elementary and junior high students as well as high school students and veteran affairs. Dr. Adkins has written an account of unknown history that needs to be brought forward. This is an excellent, well written historic account. Antoinette V. Franklin poet, author, educator
