Book Review: Mastering Your Thoughts Mastering your Thoughts is a classic book for Christians who are seeking to win the battle of life and locate and take charge of their life’s direction. The Author, Olu David presents the reader with a practical picture of how to overcome the battle that rages on in our mind by taking authority over our thoughts. As a Pastor, Olu David is very well-informed on the schemes of the evil forces in operation in the natural to takeover our minds and have us bathing in unfruitful thinking patterns and destructive behaviors. About the Book As the Author candidly states, “This is why I wrote this book to share with you what I have discovered by the Holy Spirit, as the main key of getting your mind renewed without stress. You will find so much grace staying your mind on the Word of God, on God Himself and other godly things once you understand the basic rule of being conscious of your thoughts and the power to change your thoughts.” The Book is divided into... More > five chapters (five representing the number of grace): Chapter 1- Your Thoughts and You Chapter 2 – Thoughts Not to Consider Chapter 3 – Spiritual Mind Your Choice Chapter 4 – Taking Control of Your Thoughts Chapter 5 – Thoughts to Entertain The Author writes this book in an easy to read format, as a tool guide that engages the mindset of readers. Mastering Your Thoughts, touches on how to renew our mind and the weapons of spiritual warfare to win the battle over our thoughts. In Chapter 1 the Author tells us that we can “unlock the secrets of divine information by engaging in deep thoughts.” However, if we do not do the work necessary to renew or minds these secrets will be missed and our whole Christian experience will be filled with ‘religious deception and [spiritual] delusion’. The Author employs Scripture in a brilliant way to engage our daily thought life giving us potent examples of the results that will occur of neglect to take control of our thoughts. This chapter closes with the ‘yardstick’ on which to weigh our thoughts upon, The Bible. The Bible gives us practical living guide to directing our thoughts towards positive things and refraining from evil thoughts. My views about the book I have struggled for 43 years with negative thinking patterns. Often I would find myself caught up in depression, anxiety, rage, anger, greed, selfishness, unforgiveness, bitterness, and pride. I have read many self help books that have attempted to address my confused, distracted, and ungodly thinking patterns and lifestyle they have addressed one are another, but fell short of providing a wholelistic solution. Along appears this book and its comprehensive nature of challenging me to engage my mind and take authority over my thoughts, simply because it uses the Word of God as an agent to invoke real and lasting life change. The book outlines the differences between the Spiritual Mind and the Natural Mind. It engages the natural mind to the point of exposing its exaltation of self and the natural mindsets that accompany it. The Author tells us that “A mindset indicates how your mind is formed as you grow which ultimately governs how you receive and process information. What we think about and how we think is dictated by the kind of mindset we possess.” The Author claims to have written this book for people like myself who have given up on the process to renew their minds because of discouragement and frustration at the slowness and the lack of fruition. In other words taking the elevator approach does not work! We have to follow the Authors 3 Basic Principles of Meditating on God’s Word to renew our minds in order to life a successful life.. According to the Author we do have the ability to stop and reject thoughts that attempt to enter our mind, however he suggests that this can be better managed by renewing the entire mind and acquiring a new mindset. I find this book to be an excellent approach to dealing with the natural mind and its devices to prevent Christians from living a victorious, productive, and prosperous life. First of all this book uses the Bible as a practical guide to help you renew your mind. Secondly, it challenges you to think and identify the negative thinking patterns and natural mindsets that have usurped you from finding your path in life. Lastly, it potently states that by being filled with the Spirit of reverence towards God and His Word you can overcome sin and evil thoughts. A wisdom key of this book is that our thinking is a reflection of our maturity. When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child, but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 1 Corinthians 13:11< Less
