“Have ADD? Ready to treat it? Then I invite you to read this book. The treatment of ADD has changed my life and my family’s as well. If ADD has brought you discouragement, I invite you to begin again, to reach for and discover your new, full potential.” —Oren Mason M.D. “Dr. Mason has written a superb book which provides a unique combination of insights into adult ADHD blending together the substantial expertise he has from treating hundreds of adults with ADHD as their physician but also as an adult with ADHD himself and the trenchant insights that provides to him. This is an engaging, fast-paced book chocked with useful science-based information and recommendations and crackling with the wit and wisdom rarely seen in trade books on this subject. My thanks to Dr. Mason for writing this book and my compliments to you, dear reader, for having the sense to read it.” —Russell A. Barkley, Ph.D.

Oct 15, 2009"Reaching for a New Potential: A Life Guide for Adults with ADD from a Fellow Traveler." A Fellow Traveler? A medical doctor and fellow ADD traveler? A first person account of his journey through diagnosis and treatment AND practical guidance to insure the best care for others with ADD? Yes on all accounts. With poignant personal narrative Oren Mason M.D. opens the portals of his ADD journey, from an honor student in medical school and a successful family practice too the added demands as a husband and father, demands which brought to the surface his "hidden" disability. In so doing, he moves the reader from 20th to 21st century understanding about ADD. How easily symptoms are missed or misinterpreted. Labeled as something else: "character flaw", "procrastinator", "irresponsible" "not caring". "lacking virtue" "lazy" and on and on. The author adds clarity to subtleties and complexities of this high... More > frequency, hope robbing, dangerous disorder with vivid examples of the incredible toll ADD takes on the lives of individuals, relationships, family life, career and much more. Yet, always balancing the equation by detailing the incredible gifts residing simultaneously within the individuals with ADD. Gifts of resiliency, deep caring, a depth of spirituality, and incredible willingness to try once again. Chapter two shifts quickly to the practical..."What is in this book for me?" (or my loved ones). For eight successive chapters Dr Mason offers a detailed description of the key components of getting the absolute most from treatment. Coupling his own experiences with those of his current ADD patients, Dr Mason addresses medical interventions, important physical and mental health, assembling a "care team", social and career support and interventions. The final Chapter, 14, "Perspectives on Healing ADD" is simply the best. Only one and one-half pages (good for ADD folks) is the capstone, the climax with an incredible message of HOPE for those individuals who are committed to "Reaching For A New Potential". This book, this author and the individuals described are a treasure. Sincerely, Douglas Bouman, S.Psy.S. Oct 7, 2009I highly recommend this book. It gave me a better understanding of ADD and a better understanding of the medication to treat it. Most of the concerns I've had over the treatment of ADD were addressed in this book in a way that was easy to understand and relate with. I also appreciated the honesty and personal experience that the author, Dr. Mason, shared. I had a hard time putting the book down and I found myself highlighting parts that I could relate with. I'm looking forward to reading it a second time. It was nice to read about ADD from a positive perspective for a change. I also enjoyed the author's sense of humor and how he shares his experience from every aspect of his life to give us a well rounded picture of life with ADD. I think everyone can gain something from reading this book. We all either know someone in our life with ADD or we have it ourselves. This book is full of hope and light on a subject that can fall into the dark places of negative or uneducated judgement from... More > others. This book offers a fresh and positive look at ADD. Read it and see for yourself.< Less
