In this novel, artist Basil Hallward paints a picture of Dorian Gray, a young man, and Basil thinks Dorian’s beauty creates a new vision for his art. Dorian meets Lord Henry Wotton and tells Dorian about his belief that beauty and fulfillment of the senses constitute the only valuable goals in life. Dorian’s wish for his painting to grow older instead of him is granted. As Dorian’s choices lead him to sin, his portrait shows the consequences of his actions. Later, Basil asks Dorian if the stories he has heard about his sins are true and Dorian confirms them and shows Basil the painting. Dorian kills Basil and, later, James Vane, the brother of Sibyl Vane, Dorian’s love interest who committed suicide eighteen years ago, tries to shoot Dorian, but Dorian convinces him that he is too young to have been with Sibyl. As the story progresses, Dorian’s painting becomes increasingly flawed and Dorian attempts to change his ways.
