Otakar Hurka, artistic painter, 10.9.1889 - 21.7.1966. Studied the Czech landscape with Prof. Alois Kalvoda, and remained true to this genre for the rest of his life. He spent the years between 1920 - 1923 on a study trip in France, on a grant from president T. G. Masaryk. Already in 1921 he exhibited his work of Czech landscapes at the Spring Salon in Paris, bringing him great acclaim in the local papers Echo de Paris, Petit Parisien, and Journal. Artistic reviews in Les Tablettes and La Revue Moderne resulted in a number of reproductions of his work. At the Fall Salon of the same year Hurka exhibited among other things two large canvasses showing the World War One battlefields of the French Terron. He was the sixt Czech (after Kotera, Kupka, Stretti, Zamponi, Simon) to be named member of the Fall Salon. After his return to his homeland Hurka painted and exhibited his landscapes predominantly in the region of Polabi and Posazavi.
