"Comprehensive History of Newcastle" This is a fabulous depiction of Newcastle's odyssey from a ranch in Indian Territory to Oklahoma's fourth fastest growing city. The amount of work that went into this volume is astounding, and the charm and detail of every story is conveyed beautifully with photographic clarity. Beginning with archeological finds on the banks of the South Canadian River dating back to pre-historic Native American settlements, the book's prologue catalogs the first settlers in the area after Indian Removal and the first white land owners after an act of Congress in 1900 allowed non-Indians to purchase land in the territory. Chapter by chapter, each decade is detailed with an account reminiscent of old oral story-telling traditions around a camp fire, passing the heritage of the past from one generation to the next. And each account is followed by pictures of the old sites, the ancient landmarks that served Newcastle's residents over the past century. Where... More > will the city's history go next? the book seems to ask. With the first draft of tomorrow's history in the last chapter, the reader is left with a promise of hope and with the knowledge that generations of settlers in Newcastle, like in other frontiers across the country, found a way to thrive. This fascinating tale is sure to entrance the reader and will not disappoint.< Less
