The history of Hadleigh Castle, and of Hubert de Burgh, one of the most powerful men in the realm, an heroic figure, defender of England against foreign invaders, and of his third wife, Margaret of Scotland, has been an interesting voyage of discovery. Betrayed by rivals, jealous of his influence with the young king Henry III, he led a turbulent life, and the castle and manor house at Hadleigh would have been a refuge, surrounded by forest where he could experience some peace from the many demands placed upon him.
