Frederick Chase tried to create a village at a Place Called Prospect on Shelter Island in 1836. He failed. Thirty-six years later, a group of Methodists from Brooklyn dreamed of a summer colony with thousands of houses. What they created was not so ambitious, but with two hotels across a harbor, they did create a vibrant summer community which, although now very different, still thrives.
