The life and experiences of a child in America during the Great Depression. The child is in a series of foster homes, punctuated by intermittent stays with her very abusive mother. Gradually she learns to disguise her inner feelings, to be submissive to whoever happens to be charge at the moment. But in adulthood she becomes very much her own person, a highly insightful professional person.
