The "Box" is a wonderful technique for nurturing honest and open discussions in an environment of trust, developed by Mrs. 'O', an innovative high school English teacher in San Diego. This application is implemented in the classroom, but works well with families, at work, in church and meditation groups, community groups, etc. Students anonymously submit questions -- on any topic at all -- into the Box. During the discussion session, the Box Keeper selects questions and facilitates the discussion, allowing the students to explore topics they might have been too shy or inhibited to talk about otherwise. Discussion topics then become a point of departure for writing assignments, research topics and other academic projects in which the students are truly interested and engaged. "Teaching Out of the Box" describes how Mrs. O 'finds the Box' (or did the Box find her?), practical ways of using the Box, success and cautions (never break trust) in using the box. Mrs. O and... More > Mrs. J step through transcripts of actual student discussions to illustrate how to facilitate discussions and possible academic assignments that are sparked. In the final chapter, former students give heartwarming accounts of how the Box taught important life lessons that they've carried with them as parents and professionals. As a testament to how strongly these discussions have bonded the students and teacher, the conversations continue even now on Facebook. This book is inspiring and practical. The discussions give students an amazing opportunity to learn to verbalize their thoughts and feelings, to hear each other and to be heard, to understand and experience trust and honesty and honor during their high school years. During the discussions, students must stick to Mrs. O's principles of joy, patience, peace, self control, kindness and love. As a result, they learn to give their opinions and perhaps disagree with others, to communicate respectfully and honestly. As these kids grow into adults, they bring their excellent communication skills to their families, colleagues and communities. Sandy Shum< Less
