So here I am cruising through Lulu's Sports and Adventure section looking for something different besides another superspy, end-of-the-world, techno-thriller when there it was! NOW PLAYING...AGAIN a 1960's high school fantasy that may change the results of the BIG GAME and save his best friend from a fatal fate in Vietnam. I enjoyed tracing the path of my new book across the country and when it arrived I put aside the latest Scott Turow novel and finished Patrick Dunlavy's memoir in two days. No, it's not just about a football game between two classic high school rivals, as it covers Bryan Powers' moments in the lunchroom with his buddies, notes passed between high school sweethearts, moments of conflict in the classroom, thoughts of what is going to happen after high school, in other words all of the issues we dealt with over 50 years ago and have never forgotten. But most of all it covers Bryan's ability to see into the future and act; not always to benefit himself, but to offer... More > subtle advice to his parents who seem to be growing apart, spending time with his younger sisters who react with genuine and grateful surprise, reaching out to Sister Kerry, one of his teachers, who may be having second thoughts about her direction in life and then of course how can he positively influence, with his time travel knowledge, the last football game of his high school career and save the life of Private First Class Jimmy V. This is a first class adventure for people who grew up in the 60's and for people who wish they had been there too.< Less

A wonderful book that in a word, is all about nostalgia. Reading Mr Dunlavy's book is akin to stepping back in time and reliving all the best about high school in the 60's. What a fun and thoughtful read it is. So poignant and heart rendering about losing a friend and a piece of yourself that is never forgotten but always respected.....thank you for writing this book!

I absolutely loved this book. Mr. Dunlavy captured the zeitgeist of my youth with all the anxieties, loves and losses....either he has a remarkable memory or he really did time travel. I know that everyone who recognizes themselves in the characters will cherish and appreciate his work.

Patrick has written a book that will resonate with anyone who has a past - that means everyone. It is based on the timeless idea of having a second chance to do something in your life over again. Pat's wonderful twist is that although he is re-experiencing events that took place in his youth and he occupies his high school body, his mind is that of the adult he has become. He is conscious of all that will happen and hoping he can somehow change that outcome. Although the story centers around the "big game" he had in high school, it is really about friendship, love and loss. "Now Playing...Again" is an engaging, exciting and very touching story of what most of us wish we had, a second chance.

I found this book of second-chances did a masterful job in capturing the never ending waves of exhilaration and disappointment that occur each year in the quest for high school football fame. From an adult perspective, you can relive the trials and triumphs of your own high school glory days.
