Paul Andrew Russell is a folk artist and words are his medium. Smart, gutsy, honest, sometimes raw, always refreshing. I turn to this little gem often and each time feel I have gained a new perspective on our human condition--whether it be related to politics, love, loss, religion, freedom or just life in general. There is no fluff here-if you are looking for poetry that is layered in frosting and other confections you will not find it here. This is not poetry for those who wish to maintain their illusion of a perfect world. It is also not for those who believe the only form of poetry is a sonnet as this book of poetry does not weigh itself down with the unnecessary overuse of structured form. Mr. Russell's poems sometimes read like personal journal entries, and this is part of what makes them so powerful. This little book is full of honest, intelligent observations and insights that challenge the reader. Absolutely refreshing. I am looking forward to reading more of this fine poet's... In a world of flashy media built for a generation with attention deficit disorder, it was absolute pleasure to read Paul Andrew Russell’s first collection of poetry, Pocketful of Words. The book is primarily made up of short poems which can be read in seconds but that linger with the reader a great deal longer. The poet writes of the loss of structured religion at the hands of ominous “men in robes” and the gain of something stronger in nature, something represented by bald eagles, injured crows, and budding leaves. He remembers old friends and childhood enemies. He observes neighbors upstairs and on the sides of roads. In perhaps the most powerful moment of the book, he remembers a son lost too soon. Pocketful of Words is aptly titled – it is a pocket-sized paperback that can fit in one’s pocket. I’ve carried it around all week, the pages dog-eared from pleasure. Looks can be deceiving, though. This little book of poetry packs a powerful punch. It’s life condensed, but open it up and... More > watch the magic happen. Wonderful cover art, as well. Highly recommended.< Less
