This was more than just a fun read. It was a brief but telling glimpse into the mind of a true horror fan (to the extent that we learn his appreciation for the not-so-classics). Paul Counelis not only offers reasons for his choices that would make even the most ardent hater shrug and say, "Makes sense," but he also sprinkles anecdotes from his childhood that welcomed the reader to share in his memories, the beginnings of a mind that grew to be appreciative of some of the morbid practical jokes (from his mother and grandmother, among others) that would mold him. One particularly hilarious story was how he came to know of the disastrous Plan 9 from Outer Space. I do not agree with all of his choices, but I found myself agreeing with WHY they ended up as such, which made this book more enjoyable, as a "preaching to the choir" experience would've nullified the experience of reading someone else's opinions. It's tough to disagree with a man's passion when it is... More > carefully reasoned. I recommend this to anyone who is a fan of horror films and film in general, as Counelis clearly has a grasp on the art of film-making that extends beyond the horror genre. I had a great appreciation for his view of The Exorcist, the Citizen Kane of horror flicks (or, as he puts it, "The Exorcist is The Beatles," possibly my favorite line from the book). It is not only my favorite horror film as well; it is one of my favorite movies of all time (second only to The Godfather). My only qualms (to be an honest reviewer, one should find at least SOMETHING that may aid the author in future endeavors) was that some of the pictures were a tad difficult to make out (not the case in my favorite picture of Linda Blair, thankfully) due to the darkness or quality of the printing. My other complaint was something that I suppose can be taken as a compliment, and that was the fact that I didn't want it to be over so quickly. I would've gladly read Paul Counelis's choices for 50 Underrated Horror Films (and The Exorcist) or even 100. I thought about giving this a four- rather than a five-star review, but my complaints (one of which can't even really be considered such) are nothing that should detract anyone from enjoying this book as much as I did.< Less
