"Touched, amused, and impressed," responded a family member to this short story in which Maida, Shaun, and Paul install a commemorative bench at Wadham in the University of Oxford to mark thirty years of service their father gave to College as its Manciple. Join the three around Oxford as they lunch at the White Horse pub, buy fresh asparagus from the covered market, recall a Charlie Chaplin movie, and read the poetry of W B Yeats.

A whimsical short tale told with warmth and loving sadness of the three adult children of the Manciple of an Oxford college who meet to place a commemorative bench in honour of their father and to remember him and their childhoods. While written for the family, by one of the sons, this book both interested, educated and amused me. The author enjoys word play and spices his text with obscure words which is in keeping in a book about a Manciple. I enjoyed learning about the Manciple's duties and college rituals and now I know what to expect of a gaudy - a boisterous evening's dining with multiple toasts to the possibly mythical Captain Bumps. And if you want to know what a Manciple is and does, this book will, eventually, get around to telling you.
