    This, the intended first volume of series, presents the substantial tip of a massive iceberg, that of the system [and departures from the system]of issuing each soldier with an individual identity number. The author deals exclusively with the fourth such system, covering a period rich in British military history, in which the soldiers bearing this series served in many of Queen Victoria's wars, and began the Great War. This volume deals with the regiments of Line Infantry; other are in the planning process. I recommend the book whole-heartedly for several interests: medal-collecting, military geneology, and those interested in a specific regiment with neither time nor inclination to cover the hard yards involved in a full understanding of the numbering process.
