Dec 5, 2017Paul’s work in Machine of Almosting is at times touching, heartbreaking, and laugh out loud true to life. So many moments rang true for me — he leaves his whole heart on the page. I loved this book and can see the love, sweat, and tears that went into it. You will coming away knowing both Paul Sexton and even yourself, more deeply than before.
Jul 25, 2017For starters, I was really impressed with the size of this book. Typically, I find that poetry books are maybe 100 pages long. This book is 327 pages! This isn’t a book you can skim over in an afternoon. This is a bedside reader. There’s so much that you don’t find yourself reading the same poems over (unless you want to). You can feasibly open it every night, pick a few, let them simmer and pick it back up the next day to a new experience; a new story. I love that. You want to pick it back up. Paul is a captivating writer. His dark wit keeps you entertained through some of his most revealing moments. He gives you the sense that you are hearing his inner voice. You are inside his head watching life’s circumstances unfold. His incorporation of memories gives you a sense of reference, a further understanding of how these thoughts come together and what they mean. An all-immersive experience, poetically speaking. I also love the way it’s formatted in a timeline covering a span of many... More > years. As you read, you can see the evolution of life taking place. Paul wrote about everything. His loves, losses, children, friends, co-workers…nothing was off-limits. It’s raw, sincere, honest and comically cynical at times. Paul writes down what the rest of us only dare to think and he did it when he was most vulnerable. His memories are vivid and his telling of the events puts you in the time and place it occurs. He has a gift for finding words that give life to the imagery. I’ve really enjoyed this book. I can relate to it. There was no emotion left un-tapped when reading this book. I feel like I grew along with Paul through this process. You not only experience the evolution of his life but of his gift as a writer. This book feels deeply personal. I feel as though I’ve read someone’s secret diary. The voyeur in me thoroughly enjoyed the ride. This one will remain at my bedside for regular visits. Thank you, Paul, for sharing this with us.< Less
Jul 2, 2017This book is a classic that makes the modern day poem as timeless and beautiful as a new-wave French film, a Renaissance sculpture, a great jazz riff, a Shakespearean play, a 70's thriller or a deep hip-hop beat. Paul is a master of poetry and storytelling and this collection proves it, without any doubt.
Jun 5, 2017Paul Sexton is a revelation. Few authors are able to grab an audience and keep them the way Mr. Sexton does. Whether it be his poetry or prose, Paul Sexton's work grabs you by the heartstrings almost immediately. You feel the longing, the sadness and the loneliness in the darker passages as well as the humor, the warmth and the love in the lighter sections. Machine of Almosting (and all of Sexton's other works for that matter) makes for a great read. Highly recommended.
Apr 25, 2017Phenomenal! One man's life story in poetry. So beautifully written. It is a collective conveyance of pure emotion that is so very natural to relate to. There are times when I forgot I was reading what he was feeling; instead thinking that he wrote these words to help us all convey what sometime we are unable to ourselves. Read through it one and now starting over and re-reading it.
