My War Years is a detailed, first person account of Pharmacist Mate Paul W. Smith, who served in the United States Marine Corp in the Pacific Theater of World War II. He intimately describes the hardships, horrors and humor of nearly four years of service to his country. Paul Smith took part in the invasions of Guam and Okinawa, where he was wounded in action. His rating as Pharmacist Mate brought him to the front lines of the conflict, providing medical care to the maimed and wounded in some of the bloodiest battles of the war. He begins and ends his narrative with personal recollections of family and friends that he left behind in Salt Lake City, in particular the long-distance love affair with his eventual wife of over 60 years, Alice Buckmiller Smith. The story is a personal triumph of faith and commitment from a generation that will soon be without a living testimony.

This book represents some of the best of the "Greatest Generation" in that it shows the understated sacrifice of those who served selflessly in the Second World War. The sustained warfare, hostility and intractable nature of the conflicts of the South Pacific recommend these battles for further study and appreciation by students of warfare and human nature. I am proud to be the son of the author, but this in no way understates his contribution to the lives and succor of those he served in Guam and Okinawa. The book is a personal refection in simple language of the daily experience, trials and triumphs of a Navy Corpsman serving those he was asked to serve. My father often repeats, speaking of his service, "That it was no big deal." I will leave this to the reader to judge.

I am bias being the grandson of Paul W. Smith, however, I am deeply interested in WWII history and have read many similar first-hand accounts of the terrible fighting these brave men faced. Every time I read this story, I am moved by the absolute selflessness of the sacrifices these men made. With more and more of them passing away every day, these stories are priceless. I admire my grandfather and all those who fought along side him in every part of this war. May we never see that type of fighting again, and may we, as my generation, never forget the price these men paid to bring us our freedom from tyranny and oppression. May god bless them for their sacrifices, and may we all remember their lives by supporting this and other books like them.
