Weird fiction with a darkly sensual twist. BLOWBACK delves deep into the dark, twisted roots of human nature and human sexuality. Using desire to dissect the delusions and dilemmas of will, choice and identity, this collection challenges genre boundaries and social conventions. Transgressive, confrontational, passionate, poignant, these sinister stories touch on every shade of black, from noir to the Lovecraftian cosmic abyss. Readers may be horrified, touched, tempted – never unmoved. This is the first short story collection from noted British poet and weird fiction writer Paul StJohn Mackintosh. Few British writers have dared trace the borderlines between lust, insanity and terror so graphically since Clive Barker and J.G. Ballard.

Weird fiction, as this book is self-categorised, is not what you would usually find in my library or on my nightstand. I stumbled upon the author and consequently his work from other channels. After reading the excerpt available on Google Books I was instantly hooked, could barely wait to get my hard copy delivered. Pure, organised, cuddling madness is what you will encounter. But if mad is the world we already live in, yet choose not to acknowledge, I would love it to be narrated as soothingly, as reasonably, as eloquently as this book does. You will be shocked, you will disapprove, you will be outraged, you will despair – yet through it all, you will be made to feel like it all makes perfect sense. Dark depths will flow through you, but you will feel at home. Intense, bewitching, brave, honest. Excellent writing, loved the style. Strongly recommended, not just for fans of the genre (for example within lays one of the most heart-breaking love stories you’ll read – and yes, of course,... More > it is extremely twisted too).< Less

A story collection that "reads as though some mad literary alchemist threw Lucien Greaves, Banksy, and William S. Burroughs in a blender and hit “liquefy,” or perhaps discovered the suicide note one of Lovecraft’s protagonists folded between the leaves of Beyond Good and Evil." - Review for the paperback version here:
