Sami's Story

The year 2005 will be forever remembered in Zimbabwe as the year when Robert Mugabe’s government declared war on the poorest of the poor. In an operation designated Murambatsvina or Clear away the Filth, the Mugabe government launched an all-out campaign of politically motivated violence against its own population designed to remove informal traders and so-called ‘illegal’ householders from cities and towns all over the country. Sami’s Story shows the reality of Murambatsvina as experienced by one young boy living in the rural areas with his grandmother. This book is the sequel to Going Home where the reader first met Sami as he helped the former detective, Chief Inspector Caleb Dube in a ‘missing person’ case. Now we see Sami as a 14 year-old schoolboy whose quiet life is utterly disrupted by the violence and upheaval of Operation Murambatsvina. Sami’s Story is just one of thousands.
