"Once upon a time, when I was about your age, I thought I was the only one in the whole world who didn't know how to read. I wish that someone had told me that Once Upon a Time Nobody Could Read."
Writing and reading are inventions. The modern world is so full of words in signs, books, emails, cereal boxes, packaging, & TV that a child might think that writing has always been around and that people have always been able to read.
But there was a time before writing invented, when nobody knew how to read, not even the smartest person.
This book is about that 'ah ha!' moment. It imagines the world before writing and then how it might have been invented. It shows how writing and reading just need two people to agree what a squiggle means for that squiggle to mean that for those two people. Writing is like a secret code until you are in the know!
