"A Cook's Tour of Duty" Excellent book which covers the National (military) Service of the writer. The length of the book as written by the author is sufficient to cover all the topics, topics are not glossed over, and yet are not described in such detail as to become boring. If you want to read about the service that many young men performed in South Africa in the 1970s to 1990s then this would be a book to read. From Nam to Namibia, this book depicts one of the modern wars and what the servicemen do for the majority of the time - it's not all about running around shooting the place up all day every day. There are many parallels to the other wars fought during this era, and any soldier will enjoy getting an insight into the more regular aspects of service in this Southern-most region of Africa for one of the best military forces of the time. A very interesting read overall.
