Sergi Ilyushin's WW II Il-2 was a true Sthurmovik ground-attack plane ordered by Stalin to counter the German Luftwaffe at their bases or the ground. It was robust and fulfilled the role it was designed for but not particularly liked by its pilot's who often flew many sorties a day on the Eastern Front in its cramped cockpit. Many of the Il-2 shortcomings were corrected in the Il-10 that followed though the post-war Il-1oM was by far the best machine seeing combat in the Korea War. For a while the Soviet deserted the true Sthurmovik until the advent of the 1980s Afghan War and the Sukhoi Su-25 Frogfoot that remains in the RFAF today in the new millennium.
