Get the hardback, it is great to handle. 343 pages of pure delight complete with challenging concepts and uplifting moments. I read to end of chapter 5 as soon as I opened the box. I had intended to just read the preface and introduction but Gullerud's writing is so compelling it pulls you forward in a way that lets your eyes glide across the page with ease. Gullerud is definitely a wordsmith painting images that your imagination can't help but absorb. The subject matter is one that anyone with a heart and a sense of compassion can relate. It covers not only the sentient quality of animals but also the challenges we humans face from the same unaware attitudes that seem too prevalent in society today. It leaves you identifying with the characters in empathic ways that carry over to your own experiences with people, pets, and wildlife. Don't get me wrong, its not sugar coated. Published in 2018, it is current and topical. It will enrich you in ways most unexpected. Looking forward to... More > the next book! I hope it becomes a series.< Less

Do you ever wonder at how easily we sit for hours watching video after video of cats, how we can be drawn in so directly and completely by animals displaying unique and sometimes hilarious behaviors? Peter Gullerud's Zippers will help you identify just what it is that connects the majority of us so deeply with animals, whether they are our own pets or others, whether they reside in zoos or roam in the wild, whether they're happy and healthy, or emotionally or physically hurting. There's that deep down "something," something emotional or spiritual that is touched in us by animals. Gullerud highlights that "something" in his story of Zippers, a serious, ethical, moral, human, and animal story masquerading as fantasy. The book is listed as "fantasy" on bookselling websites; however, that's probably because its author, an accomplished artist, knows as the best artists do, that those greatest Truths, those most important Ideas, settle into the hearts of their... More > audience through stories, images, or the music of emotions. Technical treatises have their place. Rhetoric, logic, and classical argument have theirs, but the greatest Truths are felt, not proven, and maybe it is those felt, truthful realizations that we can't prove, but we still yet need to grow into better people, better humans. It's the realm of the "What if" scenario or fantasy and its requiring of us to let our imagination take over that make it easier for us to feel these necessary Truths. I imagine Zipper the cat now, looking up at me and saying, "C'mon Tony, take a minute and stretch a bit, then try getting out of your own way, and let that dog, Steve, sitting at your feet tell you what he thinks. He'll help you see something important." Read the book and listen for Zipper's voice. He'll help you identify that deep down something, and you'll benefit more than you can imagine.< Less
