This volume, and its two companion volumes, make wonderful reading. True, there are rough edges throughout all three volumes - but this is, after all, a presentation of a lifetime prolific in written words, boxes and boxes of material. Much of this material has been selected, it seems, in the expectation that the typical reader will be a Sylvia Townsend Warner or Valentine Ackland scholar or enthusiast (I admit, this was my motivation too) and yet EWW's life beyond this limited angle and her family history as a greater whole is no less intriguing and engaging. The presentation (from both sides) of EWW's long and complex relationship with Evelyn was a joy to read. It was a very touching love story, with none of the mawkishness that sometimes accompanies such love stories, either in fiction or biography. I was drawn in, spellbound, to this (to me) strange world of riches and privilege in early twenties century America - and was amazed by the humanity I found there. This is greatly to... More > the credit of the author, whose own voice is heard at various times throughout all three volumes, and who writes with compassion and understanding. It is evident that he was genuinely very fond of EWW, but he is also well able to write of her with detachment and objectivity, never falling into the familiar biographical traps of sentimentality or hyperbole. This is a very real person presented in these words. The final draft notes at the end of Vol 2, where the author allows himself his own voice, make wonderful reading - better than so many over-polished biographies I have read. On the basis of these notes, I have treated myself to the 2 volumes of "Affection' by the same author, purely for the pleasure of it. I don't often write reviews (for anything at all), but I was so pleasantly surprised by these that I was glad to have the chance to congratulate Peter Haring Judd on a job very well done - not least because it is evident that this is the work of many , many years, and so lovingly undertaken. Thank you.< Less
