    This book is as important as Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged in its warning of the fate that awaits us if we do not act to fight the tide of liberal-left thinking. For Rand the threat was largely to the economic sphere (the rise and then dominance of the anti-profit sentiment). For Saunders the modern threat the liberal-left pose is to the social and political structure of free societies. Unlike Rand, however, Saunders can write! His style is descriptive and imaginative; while the dialogue is reminisent of the laconic Ellwood. Peter Saunders gained wide recognition as a leading sociologist in the 1980s and 90s, and his subtle understanding of the complex interplay of values, religious beliefs and the political structure play out beautifully in The Versailles Memorandum. The book has a tight, powerful plot which draws the reader into the compelling tale of how relativism and appeasement - the modern day hallmarks of the left - has led mid-21st century Europe to the state of servitude.
