1822: Solicitor, Rupert Mansie, must travel from England to Darkest Africa to seek out Lord Travillion Colebridge, to convey the sad news that his Lordship’s wife, Lady Abigail––whom Rupert deeply loved––is deceased:
Abigail––at the loss of her infant son, seven years earlier, and now, official death of her husband––has died of broken heart. But two weeks after her internment, news comes that Lord Travillion lives and is master and Pasha to a tribe of nomadic Arabs.
Rupert's ship is wrecked off the coast of Western Sahara and he is taken as a slave. Subjected to thirst, hunger, desert sun, and brutalised by a sadistic slave-master, Rupert endures all, only for the nocturnal visitation of Abigail’s spectre, and their illicit love affair from beyond the grave.
"––for things were shown to me in that netherworld that could not have come from my own imagination, things that so revolted and appalled me that their origins surely lie outside my comprehension of the acts of human procreation.'
