This volume lists nearly 29,000 of the estimated 31,000 Jews living in the British Isles (England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) in 1851. It gives summary details, wherever known, of when and where they were born, their parents, spouses, their residence in 1851 and occupation. Listing a unique ID number for each person, it facilitates searches on a much fuller database which is freely available online.

The on-line Index to the Jewish Community has become an invaluable tool for researchers into 19th Century Jewry providing basic information about individuals and their families and pointers to help reduce time spent on basic ground work. Now having a volume listing names, parents, spouses, etc is an added bonus, particularly for someone who has a preference for paper records. No volume with so many names and summarising so much information is going to be pocket size but despite matching a quality dictionary for size, I found it as easy to handle as one of my dictionaries, and with user friendly layout and clear and legible typeface. Petra Laidlaw is to be congratulated on her achievement.
