Natural Products, Chemical Compounds, and Gene Targets for Weight Loss: Discoveries from Genetic Interactions
eBook (PDF), 14 Pages
Body weight is decided by the balance between food intake and energy expenditure. Some genes have been found to be important signal molecules in the cells and play crucial roles in the central regulation of food intake, feeding behavior, and energy homeostasis. These genes are potential targets and biomarkers for the treatment of obesity and associated diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Many natural products, such as extracts and compounds from fruits and herbs, have weight loss effects and can protect against high-fat-diet induced obesity. These natural products and compounds can be used in food ingredients, diet therapy, or drug components for the treatment of obesity. Recent scientific studies have elucidated the molecular mechanisms of these products. The weight loss effects of these products may be mediated through adjusting genes involved in energy homeostasis. Oct 15, 2009"Natural Products and Gene Targets for Anti-Obesity" Excerpts from "Natural Products, Chemical Compounds, and Gene Targets for Weight Loss: Discoveries from Genetic Interactions": “They examined the influence of … supplementation on cell sizes and lipid metabolism in adipose tissues…. may have more benefits than the anti-diabetic drug, as it can inhibit the visceral fat accumulation…. In summary, recent studies have demonstrated that … has a great potential not only for the treatment of diabetes, but also for anti-obesity and weight loss.” “A recent study found that … supplementation significantly reduced body weight gain in rats fed with a high-fat diet. The supplement lowered visceral fat-pad weights, blood lipid levels, and blood insulin and leptin levels. … Researchers studied the molecular mechanisms of the anti-obesity effect of ... The herbal supplement suppressed fat accumulation, and inhibited pancreatic lipase activity. In addition, … significantly decreased plasma total cholesterol (TC) and triglycerol (TG) concentrations. … is a potential agent that can be used in food ingredients, diet therapy, or drug components for the treatment of obesity.” “the compound … can be a potential agent to prevent the development of diet-induced obesity. It may have such effects through inhibiting adipocyte differentiation, … and its interactions with the insulin signaling pathway.” “… may inhibit fat accumulation in subjects fed with a high-fat diet. Such anti-obesity effect may be related with increased expression of the protein … in the skeletal muscle. … This compound may be also beneficial for the treatment of atherosclerosis and diabetes mellitus.” “It has also been suggested a potential target for future drugs for anti-obesity treatment. … is expressed mostly in the limbic and sensory systems. It may be involved in motivation, emotion, autonomic functions, and sensory information processing. Subjects with …-deficiency had higher body weight, body fat mass … and had lower energy expenditure.” “... mutations in … play an important role in childhood obesity. Therapeutics targeting and adjusting these mutations may have potentials for anti-obesity, especially the treatment of childhood obesity.”< Less
