I didn't know what to expect in Freedom City, but as a long-time fan of Edward Abbey and his monkey wrench gang, I was intrigued by a novel that promised a similar experience. Freedom City is full of complex characters, cutting political humor, suspenseful action, and unexpected twists. Philip Becnel provides plenty of detail to paint a vivid image of his story, but not too much to drag down the energy of the plot. DC residents will particularly appreciate all the action set in recognizable neighborhoods, and the cultural details of different DC communities, but a reader doesn't have to be familiar with DC to enjoy the story--Becnel is a talented writer with creative imagination and a sharp wit, making for an entertaining read. Note there is some explicit content, for mature readers.

I had never looked at bedbugs in a positive light. Freedom City took me to some scary scenes that I hope never arise, but then made me laugh. Enjoy!

Set in a surreal dystopian DC with believable and identifiable characters, this quick but intelligent read shouldn't be passed up! A recommended "what if" story for politicos and nonpoliticos, alike.

Given the context of the current state of things, Freedom City is a breath of fresh air. While, indeed, the story is satirical, there's something cathartic about the Fearless Vampire Killers and their hijinks. It's a quick short read that leaves the reader satisfied. Unless, you're a Richard Spencer fan. In which case, why are you even reading this review?

Pretty wild. Sort of unbelievable, sort of not. Fascists take over Washington DC and someone finally does something about it. Good humor, deep characters. Looking forward to part 2.
