I have bought and read quite a few of Philip Challinor's books and what stands out for me are his meticulous descriptions of the twisted worlds his stories inhabit. Whether it's the faith powered starship 'Persephone' in the Voivode, the 'inters' of Terminals or, as here, the fusion of a 2000 year old culture with futuristic technology, the way these things are described lends the narrative and it's conceits a plausibility that enables the reader to put aside questions of 'how', leaving them free to soak up the atmosphere of quiet menace that pervades all of the authors works. Reading these books is like being stalked by a cat and the real artistry of the writing is the finely calibrated sense of a looming catastrophe that never arrives. The characters lives and their immediate surroundings are focused in upon while their menial existences are played out against a background that is alluded to, hinted at and given just enough form to catch your eye, which is how most of us live.... More > Against the backdrop of the multifaceted and nebulous threats in our world (global warming, nuclear war, environmental destruction to name but a few) we proceed with our modern lives, largely ignoring the low rumble of the apocalyptic nightmare that approaches, but still conscious enough of it that it informs our outlooks and attitudes, even if we are unaware of it. This is the reality of modern life that, I think, Philip Challinors books illustrate through his vibrant prose. I realise I have said hardly anything about the book for which this review has been written, but the story is so short and so compelling that I don't wish to spoil any of it's intricacies and aspects. Rather, if what I have written above sounds interesting to you, I would urge you to get a copy of this book and see exactly what I mean.< Less
