December 1964: England has spent a stable and secure quarter-century under the protection of the Third Reich, and SS officer Pollock has been protecting Laurence Gilmore, an eccentric but remarkable artist. Now, Laurence Gilmore has been shot. Beset by political and physical stresses and the worries of approaching fatherhood, Pollock begins to suspect that there is more to Gilmore's death than the loss of his extraordinary eye.
