Set in an unnamed country in a future either near or not-so (and there's an argument for each), Challinor's latest dystopian mystery imagines a world of eternal summer, in which water is in short supply and pricier than alcohol, and migrants from flood-ravaged lands are tagged and put to work as effective slaves. Visner, a businessman, is sent to the coastal town of Gullands to facilitate a deal for his corporate masters, in the wake of a local disaster which has unearthed a bizarre and menacing archaeological discovery of a canine nature. The milieu is resonant of Christopher Priest's Dream Archipelago (and, on a personal level, of Scarborough); the atmosphere one of parched, creeping dread. Cosmic horror is hinted at throughout, with recurrent evocations of a mythology bearing more than a little resemblance to the Norse, and the satirical elements - modern management jargon is relentlessly skewered - yield to the terror of the final revelation. Another superbly upsetting tale.
