This book attempts to make a diagnosis which is the prerequisite for any intelligent search for answers that may have a chance of working. Inflation is not a temporary aberration of an otherwise healthy economic system. Inflation is based on the structural characteristics of the system - and no modification of inflation is likely to succeed unless the underlying structures which produce the inflation are themselves modified. The diagnosis reveals that the structures and institutions which produce inflation, and which benefit from it, are among the most powerful economic and political power groups in our society. As long as they continue to have unrestricted power, we will suffer from continued inflation. The problem of inflation is that of monopoly control and power. It is this indissoluble relationship between inflation and power that makes it impossible to find easy solutions for it.
