An outstanding book of poetry. Philippe Shils' eloquent poems share the daily realities of parenting a disabled child, invite the reader to share the moments in which frustration reigns and hope is too frail to hold its own. It is his willingness to write about these moments with uncompromising honesty that renders the reader capable of also sharing the beauty and light that is Lucia's smile in the swimming pool, or her recognition of "the shape of home," or the miracle of shuffling into the kitchen when she's "thirsty." hey hey pretty baby is a documentary that puts words to the magic and resilience of love.

There are poems in here that are just startlingly good-- ones whose power and grace and feeling comes together so simply that they read like classics. But to isolate any of the single poems seems wrong; "hey hey pretty baby" is a whole, and a complex one. It's a small book that's not afraid to take on the biggest stuff: life and love and their fugitive rhythms....

Phil Shils is an amazing person an incredible father and insightful poet. I have read his book cover to cover several times and find new meaning and depth with each pass. His incredible use of language to illustrate an otherwise intangible human condition is nothing short of inspirational. This is book is a gift, a glimpse through a window into a world divided by a Father's expectations and the very present reality that rarely find congruence; but in those brief moments he has the ability to share through words and allows us to enter in to his life experience. Thank you, Phil!

I can only say that this book brought tears to my eyes. And that I loved "rules for writing about lu" for reasons that, I hope, don't require me to violate any of those rules. And that the poetry made me laugh, and also that I saw my family, and me, in it. Poetry seems like an awfully personal thing to review. I can only say, for me: a beautiful work.

Phil really captured the essence of some of the difficult and emotional situations that he has dealt with as his daughter has been growing. I especially liked the poems "Visitors" and "The Brain Surgeon". Gossamer! How eloquent! Congratulations Phil!!

This turbulent and tender anthology leaves me breathless. Searingly honest and painful, beautiful and boundless. These are words that had to find their way onto paper, desperate, aching, and full of love.

Only poetry allows us to truly and meaningfully encounter those aspects of life which we have not ourselves experienced. Phil Shils has allowed us to enter his unique world through these beautiful, honest, and heart-breaking moments captured in the difficult yet awe-inspiring journey he shares with a special daughter. The writing is forceful, totally honest, and masterful. There are no cliches, no gimmicks, and no feel good easy answers. There is wonder here, and frustration and, yes, rage over a situation that dominates the very identity of the family. But above all, there is love—love in its quiet, many-sided dimensions. Phil Shil has a special daughter. And, thankfully, he has all the necessary skills not just to nurture that daughter, but to give us a haunting sense of that relationship in words that will linger in your mind long after you finish reading his poems.
